Overview of Gifted Identification
One of the most frequently asked questions about the gifted program is “How are students identified as gifted?” Craven County Schools has developed a process to identify students as gifted within our district. While the 2016-19 AIG Plan provides detailed information about the identification process, this page will provide a quick overview.
The three stages in the identification process are screening, referral, and identification.

Stage 2: ReferralDuring the referral process, specific evidence of giftedness is collected in three areas: Achievement, Aptitude, and Artifacts. Achievement test scores measure the mastery of grade level content while aptitude test scores measure a student’s potential to achieve. Artifacts collected may include portfolios of student work or checklists of behaviors frequently observed in gifted students.
When sufficient evidence is documented, a Gifted Education Team (GET) meeting is held and a determination of services is made. |
