Welcome!
Welcome back to a new school year and another fabulous year of gifted programming! I am excited to help your children develop their innate visual-spatial reasoning and problem solving talents, as well as gain a greater understanding of math and reading concepts.
To begin the year, students in all classes will complete activities that will help them understand and develop the social and emotional aspects of being gifted, including what it means to be gifted, self-understanding, talent development, personal competence, and communication competence. The lessons used are aligned to both Common Core and National Association for Gifted Children standards
During Socratic Scholars (IG) classes, students will be using critical thinking and problem solving skills to complete engineering and computer science units that have applications in our global society. During the units, students will understand not only the design aspects inherent to engineering, but also the global aspect of the field and career path of a person in the field that we are learning about.
Reading Scholars will dive deeper into reading and researching, and will be challenged to write a novel during the month of November. Expect a word study for homework each week!
Math Scholars will be challenged with authentic problems/applications and asked to develop a product that could actually be used in the real world. Expect a Math Stars worksheet each week! The problems require students to use logic and mathematical reasoning to find the answer, which really helps to develop critical thinking skills.
If you ever have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at school or through email (best option) at [email protected].
Supply List:
1 two pocket folder (preferably plastic)
2 composition or spiral notebooks
One clear shoebox sized storage container (Socratic Scholars only)
Throughout the year, students may be asked to bring in other disposable items from home to be used in the engineering projects.
